The Law

“It is better to be a mouse in a cat’s mouth than a man in a lawyer’s hands.”

Spanish proverb

Obtaining Value in Law

Years ago I came to believe that the biggest need in the legal profession was counseling. Today I am convinced of this. Lawyers don’t do much counseling because they can’t make any money at it. Lawyers make their money on people’s mistakes, misjudgments and lack of proper planning. People don’t seek advice until they have run into trouble. When people are in trouble they will pay a king’s ransom to get out. People will pay $100,000 in legal fees to get out of trouble but won’t pay $300 for a legal consultation that would have prevented the problem in the first place.

Large corporations have legal counsel on staff. A large corporation, like Exxon will have a large legal staff armed with experts in every area in which they do business. Why? Why not just call on lawyers when you need them. Because Exxon knows where the bargain is in law. Sound advice, sound planning, and the resulting sound business practices.

Run your legal business like Exxon. Stay tuned; SnakeBites will show you how.

Questions Rule

Well, we have an elephant in the bath tub. You don’t like lawyers. Don’t worry; as you can see from the quote above, you are not the Lone Ranger, and this sentiment has been around since the earth cooled off.

It is not my goal to change your opinion of the legal profession but to teach you how to use the services of lawyers efficiently and at the lowest possible cost. A lawyer’s services are a great bargain if you know where to look. SnakeBites will educate you.

No one likes to feel dumb. To handle your legal affairs you have to own your lack of knowledge. Fear of ignorance or looking foolish must never keep a person from seeking legal counsel. SnakeBites will teach you to handle these issues SnakeBites will teach you to ask the right questions. Once you learn the art of asking questions you can anticipate and handle any legal problems you might have.

If you were going to build a house, should you get a lawyer? Yes, you should. This should be before you hire an architect or builder. Building a house involves construction law, which is highly specialized and contains numerous lien statutes that can affect you. So find a construction lawyer and make an appointment for a half hour consultation. Prepare a memorandum outlining all the facts and email it to him with a list of questions, AND asking him to guide you need to do legally to protect yourself.

SnakeBite: One of the greatest values today is sound, timely advice from a lawyer with the required expertise. Learn to value questions and not answers. Valuing questions and learning how and when to ask them is critical to managing legal affairs.
