Family Law: another universe

The quote above was intended by Richard to be funny. He was one of the great comic minds of all time. But a closer examination suggests there is more truth than humor in his statement.

There is nothing in the legal profession that approaches family law for intensity, and depth of feelings. Family law involves our most important value: our family, our children. People who come into a lawyer’s office seeking help with a divorce or custody issue are often distraught to the point of collapse. As a result a family law client cannot be treated like a commercial client. What a family law client needs vary. Each divorce is different but beneath the surface is hurt, pain, fear, anger, and a deep sense of loss. More than any other area of the law, family law requires a lawyer to be skilled with people.

Communication between lawyer and client is critical. This is the most important step they have ever taken and may be the first and last time the client has any experience in the judicial system. The client needs to be educated about what the likely results are and to be comforted that better days are ahead.

Years ago the book Exodus was written by Leon Uris about a ship transporting Jews into Palestine to escape the holocaust. Uris wrote numerous novels in his career. One of my favorites is QB VII which stands for Queens Bench VII, the number of the courtroom where the story unfolds. It is a story of a libel trial by a prominent English doctor accused of being a Nazi war criminal.
